Kingship develops in the eastern Niger Delta states

Comparison of the kinglists of the eastern delta states (Nembe, Elem Kalabari, Bonny, Okrika) suggests the kingship institution developed between about 1200 and 1400, the migrations from the central Ijo delta having occurred much more than a thousand years ago. The characteristic House system was probably developed before about 1600.
