Oyo begins rapid expansion into the forest zone

From about 1600 Oyo underwent rapid expansion southward and southeastward into the forest zone, becoming one of the largest empires in the Nigerian region. At its eighteenth-century height it covered roughly 18,000 square miles, built on a cavalry sustained by horses traded from the north.
