Portuguese missionary work, concentrated on the Itsekiri after failing to gain a foothold in Benin, generated reports on the kingdom's economy. In 1597 the Bishop of São Thomé described the Itsekiri kingdom of Warri as "very poor." In the 17th century the Dutch found Warri relatively inaccessible and its trade unprofitable.
