Law places the reigns of Alafin Abipa and his successor Obalokun in the first half of the seventeenth century. After the reoccupation of Oyo Ile, these Alafin consolidated the kingdom and began the outward expansion that would make Oyo an imperial power. The principal political institutions of the Oyo capital as reconstructed by Law were probably operating in their mature form from the early seventeenth century onward.
