What happened

The establishment of the Nupe kingdom is associated with Tsoede (Edegi), said to have been fathered by an Igala king and a Nupe woman. After his father's death he fled upstream from Idah with insignia of office in a celebrated bronze canoe piloted by Kyedye canoe-men, established himself at Nupeko at the Kaduna-Niger confluence, and conquered the pre-existing Beni Nupe confederacy. The event is placed towards the end of the 15th or early 16th century.
