Usman dan Fodio launches the Sokoto jihad

Usman dan Fodio and his followers launched a jihad that transformed much of the Hausa states and created the Sokoto Caliphate. This matters because the caliphate became the largest precolonial political structure incorporated into British Northern Nigeria, and indirect rule later worked through emirate authority.
