The warlord Kurumi took over Ijaye in 1829 and built enormous personal wealth; by 1859 he is reported to have had over 300 wives and over 1,000 slaves serving as soldiers and agricultural laborers on his expansive farmlands. He typified the slave-and-land-based warlordism of nineteenth-century Yorubaland.
