In 1827 Britain established a naval base at Fernando Po to serve as a staging point for the West Africa Squadron's operations against the slave trade.

What happened

In 1827 Britain established a naval base at Fernando Po to serve as a staging point for the West Africa Squadron's operations against the slave trade. Fernando Po subsequently became the seat of the British Consulate for the Bights of Benin and Biafra. The island was also used as a place of exile for deposed Delta rulers, notably King Pepple of Bonny.
