What happened

It is generally believed that Asian food crops, including plantains, bananas, one type of cocoyam and citrus fruits, reached Africa from Indonesia via Madagascar or the adjacent east coast in the first half of the first millennium AD. There is also linguistic evidence that Asian yams reached India about the first century AD. These crops would subsequently have spread westward across Africa to Nigeria.
