What happened

Oba Ewedo, the fourth ruler of the new dynasty, carried out a coup d'état freeing the ruler from subordination to the Uzama chiefs: he compelled all chiefs to stand in his presence, forbade them to use swords of state or confer titles, built a new palace apart from the chiefs' compounds, and organised a hierarchy of palace officials. He also renamed the state Ubini. His palace association Iwebo, under its leader the Uwangue, acquired oversight of finance and trade.
